Juvenile Runaways

Full Video Transcript

Juvenile runaways are a serious problem. While it was once believed that kids ran away from home to seek adventure or rebel against their parents or other adults in their care. More recently, runaways have been regarded as victims of dysfunctional families or unhealthy situations. Triggers include arguments with others in the home, criminal behavior, alcohol or drug use, school problems, physical and sexual abuse, pregnancy, rigid rules or expectations at home that do not account for normal developmental changes or authoritarian parenting styles. The good news is most runaways don't go far and only a few actually leave the state. But, runaways often become victims of crime or abuse while on the streets. Contact the police immediately if you have a runaway. Families may wish to seek the advice an attorney or private investigator as well.
