What Is Automatic Emancipation

Full Video Transcript

Generally, to be freed from a parent’s control and custody, a minor child must file a petition with the court requesting emancipation. Under certain circumstances, a minor may receive automatic emancipation and thus no longer be under the parents’ responsibility. Automatic emancipation occurs when the minor marries, reaches the age of majority, usually that’s 18, or joins the military.
