The field of family law covers everything from adoption to divorce. If you have a family law-related matter, you should first organize some basic information and answer a few questions in order to make your initial consultation as productive and efficient as possible. Your attorney will want to know your marital statues, the number of children you have, whether you own a home, and whether you work. Next, your attorney will want to know what types of services you're seeking. You might want help with adoption, child custody, child support, domestic violence issues, spousal support, visitation rights, or perhaps a combination of these. Finally, you should tell your attorney if you or your spouse has ever previously sought the assistance of an attorney. It might be a good idea to write down some basic bullets addressing these questions, and construct a timeline of events if appropriate. Remember, anything you tell your attorney is confidential so make sure you disclose all matters even remotely related to your case.
