Extraordinary Ability Visas

Full Video Transcript

Aliens with extraordinary professional abilities may be able to obtain a special type of visa to enter the U.S. The EB-1 program allows aliens with extraordinary achievements in the sciences, arts, education, business, or athletics to immigrate to the U.S. permanently simply by demonstrating that they've risen to the very top of their field. However, only a small percentage of people actually meet the criteria. For example, if you've received the Nobel Prize in your field, you will qualify for an EB-1 classification. However, EB-1 visas aren't limited to Nobel Prize winners. Receipt of lesser recognized prizes for excellence, being published in significant professional journals, or other significant commercial or professional achievements may qualify you for the program. One very attractive feature about EB-1 visas is that applicants do not need a sponsor or even a prospective U.S. employer. Rather, extraordinary ability candidates may petition for their own permanent residency. Given that significant proof of an extraordinary ability must be shown in order to obtain the visa, the assistance of an attorney who is experienced in this area of law is usually recommended when preparing the application.
