Nominal Damages

Full Video Transcript

Nominal damages are a small amount of money plaintiffs are awarded after a lawsuit even though no substantial harm was suffered. This serves as recognition that a legal injury occurred even though it may have been slight. Nominal damages make the legal point that the plaintiff was in the right with their claim. Nominal damages will be awarded for a breach of contract or for an intentional tort to vindicate the plaintiff's claim where no recoverable loss can be established.
