Do you need a family-based immigrant visa? There are two main categories of family-based immigrant visas. There is the immediate relatives category and the family preference category. Examples of immediate relatives are spouses, unmarried children under 21 years old and parents of a U.S. citizen. The number of visas is not limited in the immediate relative visa type, which allows for a relatively quick visa process for those who qualify. Other family members who are not immediate relatives may not obtain a visa as readily. Because such visas are generally limited and may take many years before one is available for a foreign relative.
