Civil remedies are the legal means used by an injured person for recompense for a wrong they suffered. Remedies focus on what a party is entitled to, if that party succeeds in proving they were wronged. Civil remedies range from enforcement of a right to imposing a penalty. Courts must distinguish between a legal remedy such as payment of money to the victim, and an equitable remedy like injunctive relief or specific performance. Sometimes courts will determine the rights the parties in a lawsuit without awarding damages or ordering equitable relief. This is known as declaratory relief.
