As the name suggests, to "cease and desist" basically means to stop doing something. Courts often issue cease and desist orders to officially halt illegal activities. However, a cease and desist letter can be sent by anyone with a legal right to request someone else to stop doing something they shouldn't be doing. It's a good idea to have an attorney draft a cease and desist letter, though, because it can lead to legal action if the recipient doesn't respond to the request. The failure to abide by a valid cease and desist request, or a court order, can result in very serious legal consequences, including civil and possible criminal liability.
